About 70% of the Black-capped Chickadees' diet consists of small insects and spiders. They also eat seeds and berries, as well as fat from animal carcasses. In this picture, the male is about to bring a recently captured insect back to the nest.

A parent arrives with a big mouthful of food. You'll notice that most nestlings defecate as soon as they swallow, which ensures the parent will be around to remove the fecal material.
