    Building Again

    Jun 19, 2009 -
The chicks from the last attempt in this box just fledged at the beginning of the week. The female is already building the nest back up for another attempt!

    Two, Maybe More?

    Jun 24, 2009 -
There are currently two eggs in the nest. Bluebirds typically lay 4 or 5 eggs, so we can anticipate a few more.

    Jun 26, 2009 -
The female is doing well. She has been laying one egg a day for a total of four eggs.

    Due Date

    Jul 01, 2009 -
Incubation on these eggs probably began sometime around June 26th. That means we can anticipate hatching to be around July 10th.

    Celebrating the 4th

    Jul 04, 2009 -
Birds don't really notice the passing of the 4th of July. This female just spent the day incubating her eggs.

    Small Eggs

    Jul 06, 2009 -
It's hard to believe how small and fragile these eggs are. On average bluebird eggs are about 20mm (3/4 in.) by 16.5 mm (1/3 in.). Their mass is only about 3 grams (about .1 ounces)!

    Hatch Day!

    New Chicks

    Jul 10, 2009 -
Though rather hard to see, it appears as though all four of the Eastern Bluebird chicks have hatched.

    Hungry Mouths

    Jul 13, 2009 -
With four mouths to feed, the adults have to make frequent trips to the nest. Each of the chicks is fed about 3 times an hour.

    Fledge Date

    Jul 22, 2009 -
The camera was down for about three days. The chicks have grown significantly in that time though. They should be fledging by the end of this week!

    Practice

    Jul 24, 2009 -
These chicks have been spending the morning working their wings and huddling near the box entrance. These are usually good signs that they are ready to go!

    Fledging!

    Jul 26, 2009 -
