    Wood Duck on 17 eggs

    Apr 15, 2009 -
    Cam hosts report that multiple ducks started laying around March 23. They think there were 3 eggs that day. On April 1, they think there were 16 eggs. The 17th egg was laid on April 2 and incubation started.

    At this site reports are that multiple ducks started laying around March 23 and they think there were 3 eggs that day. On April 1 there were 16 eggs and they think she laid the 17th egg and started incubating on April 2.

    Hidden Eggs

    The female will bury her eggs under the wood chips and feathers, making them almost impossible to see.

    Egg Burial

    When the female wood duck leaves, she covers her eggs with down and wood chips. Here's a picture of her getting back to the box and uncovering the eggs.

    Looking Out

    The female looks out of the box for a moment, allowing us a clear view of all her eggs. It looks like she may have more eggs and been the victim of egg dumping.

    Taking Care

    The female wood duck is covering her eggs with wood chips and feather down before leaving the box. The eggs should hatch around the 2nd of May.

    Two Females

    There are two females in the box. Often, females with go in each the nest of another and lay more eggs. This is called egg dumping.

    Hatch Day!

    May 02, 2009 -
    Once the eggs start pipping the female generally does not leave the nest. After the first hatch, the rest of the ducklings hatch within 6-18 hours. Deb sent two video clips from the hatching this afternoon.
